What We Believe

We believe the Bible to be God’s word and the Lord Jesus Christ to be his eternal Son.

The Father and the Son and the Spirit are co-equal; three distinct Persons, but one God. This mystery, revealed in the Bible, is commonly referred to as the Trinity. Everything we have is from the Three-in-One God, who created all things and maintains them by his power.

Mankind is not in a good place – read the news! This is a symptom of our rebellion against God and of self-centred, disobedient lives. However, God has a plan to save us from the consequences of our sinful actions and thoughts – even the worst of us. This is because he loves you unconditionally.

Jesus came to make it possible. He became a man and lived in humble circumstances, without ceasing to be God. Amazing but true! Supremely qualified to act as our representative, he lived a perfect life before God for us and voluntarily died on the cross in our place. In this way, as our substitute, he paid the penalty for sin and he has reconciled us to God. Afterwards he rose triumphantly from the dead, as witnessed by his followers, and returned to be with the Father in glory.

As a result of what Jesus has done, we can be forgiven and receive eternal life. All God requires of us is that we believe and gratefully accept the salvation offered to us. Jesus has done it all.

I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. (John 5:24)
People who receive Jesus as their Saviour come to know God, personally. The Father and Son have sent the Holy Spirit to be our Helper. He convinces us and confirms these things to be true and gives new life. In this way, he makes us able to receive Jesus and to live as Christians in the world. God will never give us up. This is the good news.

There is another side to the good news: We also have to warn people that Jesus is coming again in the final scene of history. On that day, all the living and dead will be judged. Those who have received Jesus as their Saviour will inherit eternal life. Those who have rejected him will be punished for their sins and banished forever. That may appear scary and will be very sad, but don’t forget that God has provided a way out.

There is much more to say, but that is the gist! If you would like to know more, there are many good statements of faith with which we would wholeheartedly agree. A very good one is on the Affinity website. [www.affinity.org.uk/doctrinal-belief/doctrinal-belief] Better still come to our fellowship and discover all that God has provided for you in his Son.
